FROM THE CEO

Jacqueline Brinkman , Chief Executive Officer
It was wonderful to see so many Economic Development Australia ( EDA ) members together in Sydney recently for the National Economic Development Conference ( NEDC22 ).
The first national face to face gathering for the profession since 2019 , the presentations , discussions and collegial networking demonstrated that economic developers are agents of change , working at a grass roots level to address some of the key complex economic challenges facing Australia . Many of the themes raised during NEDC are continued in this edition of the EDA Journal .
Paul Hodgson ACEcD builds on his excellent presentation at NEDC , with further evidence of the opportunity and responsibility available to Australia to take a leading role in global decarbonisation efforts . Paul demonstrates a range of examples of decarbonisation-based economic development occurring across Australia .
Dr Kevin Johnson also elaborates on his compelling presentation at NEDC , providing an insider ’ s guide to the development of the Global Urban Monitoring Framework ( UMF ). Kevin provides an excellent explanation of the use of impact-oriented data to measure economic development .
NEDC keynote speaker and global Community Wealth Building expert , Neil
McInroy invites the reader to consider our assumptions regarding economic success and give greater consideration to how the economy truly works for people , place and the planet .
In his article , Graeme Thiessen demonstrates the importance of placemaking in well-considered public places and the interconnectivity between their contribution to sustainable economic , social and environmental development .
This edition also features the finalists and winners of the 2022 National Economic Development Awards for Excellence . We enjoyed a truly unforgettable celebration at the gala event at Luna Park . As well as congratulating the winners and finalists , the evening also gave us the opportunity to honour EDA members who have achieved recognition as Australian Certified Economic Developers since the program launched in 2020 . On an evening where we honoured excellence , it was a privilege to also congratulate those members who have committed to excellence through their own professional development . And of course , nobody will forget the fantastic impromptu music performances by EDA members and special guests ! Lots of fantastic photos included in this edition and the whole library is available via the EDA website .
I would like to take this opportunity to wish EDA Training and Events Coordinator , Melissa Geist all the best as she embarks on an exciting new phase on Norfolk Island with her family . Melissa has been instrumental to the success of the EDA National Education and Training Program and we will all miss her enthusastic professionalism !
Thank you to all our contributors to this final EDA Journal for 2022 . I wish all our readers a safe a happy festive season and look forward to connecting with EDA members in 2023 !
Kind regards ,
Jacqueline Brinkman GAICD Chief Executive Officer Economic Development Australia
