AN EXAMPLE OF BEST PRACTICE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area ( Mackay Waterfront ) was declared on 25 May 2018 by the Minister for Economic Development Queensland ( EDQ ) and at the request of Mackay Regional Council ( Council ) to establish the necessary policy and governance framework to stimulate development and deliver significant benefits to the community .
The declaration of the Mackay Waterfront provides opportunities to redevelop the underutilised Pioneer River and Binnington Esplanade waterfronts ; support the function of the City Centre as a key business hub ; establish a precinct for innovation ; and provide activated and exciting streets , places , and attractions to improve the city ’ s liveability , investment attraction and tourism appeal . Council ’ s endorsement of the Master Plan ( 2020 ) and commitment to public realm improvements offers a significant catalyst to attract private investment that will deliver a more diversified regional economy .
This article will explore Mackay Waterfront as a case of best practice economic development , provide examples of how the Mackay Waterfront framework and objectives are being implemented and explore the steps Council is taking to capitalise on Mackay ’ s strong economic position .
ECONOMIC POSITION Situated only an hour ’ s flight from Brisbane , the Mackay region boasts many benefits of a fast-growing regional city . Its coastal location is complemented by its spectacular natural environment , which includes 31 beaches , a picturesque blue river and pristine rainforest hinterland .
The strong diversified economy , led by our globally recognised resource and engineering sector , resurging agribusiness , and growth in construction , education , logistics and tourism has fuelled the region ’ s sustained growth . The level of growth to date has furnished the region with a depth of assets and infrastructure , which will provide continued support for
