GROUND-BREAKING PROJECTS DELIVERED THROUGH CLEANTECH INNOVATIONS GEELONG Procurement for innovation Through Cleantech Innovations Geelong , the City of Greater Geelong has applied this game-changing method twice .
The City ’ s first procurement for innovation generated a new , fibre reinforced geopolymer product . The product has been used to build zero-maintenance recreational footbridges with a useful lifespan of over 100 years . The bridges are a prime example of circular economy in action . Made in Geelong , the fibre reinforced geopolymer bridges are the first of their kind . The bridges are stronger and last significantly longer than materials used to build conventional recreational bridges . The geopolymer used in the bridges is made from recycled materials , fly ash , and can be recovered at the end of their life for recycling .
After this initial positive experience , the City embarked on a second procurement for innovation to apply circular economy principles to road infrastructure products . This project aims to use kerbside recycling collected from households in the municipality .
An e-learning training course will be available in the second half of 2021 . The course is designed to help other public sector procurers use their buying power to create innovative solutions to their problems .
Closing the loop on food waste Cleantech Innovations Geelong facilitated a project between Deakin University and the CSIRO to process food waste on site at Deakin ’ s Waurn Ponds campus .
