Prom 2013: A Roaring Success
The dresses sit quietly back on the hanger, photos have been endlessly pored over, and the decorations have all been pulled down. This year’s prom is now in the past.
But what a prom it was. The year’s biggest social event was held April 20 at the Aladdin Center in Columbus. And the word “biggest” is accurate – a record number of 456 tickets were sold. Students had a lot to say about their big night. “When I walked in, I was overwhelmed by the decorations and everything,” said Alexandra Pierson, a junior. “I had a great night and met people I don’t think I would have if I didn’t go. I was also able to meet up with my friends who I knew were going. I had a blast and can’t wait for next year’s prom!” Stephanie French, another student, was able to accomplish something she’d wanted to do for years. “I met my best friend from sixth grade,” she said. “We’ve been talking since sixth grade and never been able to meet in person!” “I got to hang out with her all night,” she added. “We talked and hugged and were like ‘Yay! Finally!’” She described meeting up with her classmates as “just incredible” and described how inclusive students were throughout the night. “Everyone tried to include other people,” she said. “If I wandered away from my group, people would come up and ask if I wanted to dance.” Student Chelsea Abram also met some new people throughout the evening. “We danced, talked, and hung out,” she said. “I still hang out with those people outside of prom. It’s nice to have some friends through ECOT I can hang out with.” Justice Baker, a junior, said he enjoyed “just getting together with some of my friends I haven’t seen for a while.” “If you get the chance to go, you should definitely go,” he advised other students. Organizer Dreama Rice was extraordinarily proud of how everything came together for this year’s event, shaped by a “Roaring 20s” theme. Many students and staff arrived in fashions from yesteryear, including flapper dresses. “The theme worked well with the art deco trim already in place at the location,” Rice said. “We had a great turnout and the dance floor was quickly filled with smiling faces. I felt the decorations for the dance looked better than any other year and the students greatly enjoyed the props and the addition of the photo booth.” The evening had its share of highlights - including one student proposing marriage. Thomas Jakupca popped the question to his girlfriend, Marie Cohoon. Both were standing in front of their classmates and teachers, illuminated by the soft glow of colored lights. The crowd erupted into cheers when she happily accepted. “I’ve known the Jakupca family since my first day at ECOT nearly 11 years ago, and have had the opportunity ??????Q???????????????????????????????????????t?I?????????????????????q????????????????????????????????????t?????????????????????????????????????????q
