Pediatric Nurse  What is the description of the position? Pediatric nurses give care to sick and injured babies, toddlers, and children in healthcare facilities. They work with physicians, other nurses and healthcare professionals to provide healthcare to children, administer medicines, use medical equipment while performing minor medical operations and help to inform parents/families on the illness, care and continued care after the hospital stay. You work with children who sometimes may not understand why they are in the hospital, or cannot communicate for themselves. You also have to consult with parents/guardians for care and treatment.  What are the duties/job responsibilities of the position? Pediatric nursing duties are similar to nursing duties in other departments or nursing. A pediatric nurse is typically a registered nurse who specifies in providing healthcare to children and adolescents. They assist pediatricians and doctors by providing medical care to the younger patients. Pediatric nurse’s job duties may be administering medications, placing intravenous lines on patients, and administering other kinds of therapies. Some duties can include conducting physicals, child immunizations, screening for disease, diagnosing illnesses, and prescribing medication. Responsibilities for pediatric nurses can vary depending on where you work. Pediatric nurses have the responsibility to document a patient’s progress through careful record keeping, and notify doctors of any changes. They assist doctors by checking vital signs, drawing blood, giving vaccinations, and taking patients histories.  What are the requirements/prerequisites/ qualifications/ credentials for the position? Pediatric nurse requirements include wither an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in nursing. You can get a good job with an associate’s degree which would take two years but for the best opportunity it is advised you to get a bachelor’s degree which you can get at a four year accredited college. Once you graduate, you must take and pass the national licensing, call the NCLEX-RN, to practice as a registered nurse. Once you become an RN, depending on what type of pediatric work you would like to do, whether it be working with children with cancer, newborns (neonatal), children with disabilities or children who have critical illness’, you may need additional training and education in those nursing skills. Once you become a pediatric nurse you can further your education and get your master’s. With your masters you can become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNP). To become these after you get your master’s you must take an exam and meet state certification and continue your education. Other qualifications you may want as a pediatric nurse may be to have the ability to form quick connections with young patients; nurses are the ones who make children comfortable going to the doctors and dissipate their fear.
