It is well known that India and China are two of the most rapidly growing economies in the world, hence they are components of the BRIC group.

Part of this massive growth can be attributed to their increased trade with the Western world, with countries such as the US and UK, which has been aided by the increasing number of English speakers in India and China. In China 0.73% of people speak English, whilst this percentage is low, due to the large population this is around 10,000,000.

Whereas in India 10.35% of people speak English, which is 125,226,449 people.

These countries’ ability to speak English allows easier communication with the US and UK, allowing for simpler forms of trade such as goods but also for the exchange of services. This is especially relevant for India whose trade with the UK is 62% comprised of exchange in services.

Therefore, English has been intergral to the development of the Indian economy and of small benefit to the Chinese economy.
