Ecological Health Report (2nd Annual) 2022 | Page 37

Mapping layers for tidal inundation were created for the Kiawah River Watershed using a geospatial model which acknowledges upland barriers ( Balstrøm and Kirby , 2022 ). Visual analysis of the inundation map layers on Little Bear Island provides insight into potential areas impacted by extreme tides . Shrub thicket along the marsh edge is shown to be impacted by moderate flood levels ( 4.36 foot ). During major flood events ( 4.86 foot ), a significant portion of inland shrub thicket habitat which provides ample support for wildlife is inundated with sea water . The majority of the major flood events occurred between September and November at the end of the growing season . Because the aerial imagery used in our analysis is captured in late summer to early fall , it is likely detecting declines in vegetative productivity due to salt stress .
