In September 2021 , SCDHEC released a report for Shellfish Management Area 11 which encompasses the entirety of the Kiawah River and provides the status of shellfish harvesting . Analysis of water quality samples by SCDHEC exceeded the threshold values for bacteriological levels , indicating impairment from non-point source pollution . Following the report , the western portion of the Kiawah River was partially restricted for the 2022-2023 shellfish harvesting season . Marshland areas in the Upper Stono River , Bohicket Creek , Bass Creek , and Cinder Creek remained restricted with similar impairment issues .
