Soulmates
There is no greater connection between humans
and animals than when they live and love together as a
family. My cats are truly my children – I care for them,
worry about them, would risk death for them… Recently,
I lost one of my precious darlings. Faune (her name
means “wildlife” in French) was the sweetest, most beautiful cat you’d ever seen. Losing her has been the most
devastating time in my life.
Someone offered me advice on an online forum
for pet loss, very shortly after the event. He said,
“Sometimes a replacement pet helps.” I was shocked by
his audacity to suggest such a thing. A few months after
Faune’s passing, we did come across the opportunity to
adopt kittens who would have otherwise gone to a shelter.
We considered the adoption very seriously, as we have
done with all our cats, and we ultimately decided that we
could handle an expansion of our family, and that after a
rough few months, we deserved a little happiness as the
Christmas holiday approached. Rather than spend that
family time depressed and saddened by our first Christmas without one of our furbabies, instead we had the
chance to have a merry kitteny Christmas, watching them
experience new firsts and kitten cuteness. It did lessen the
blow of the sadness we still felt by not having Faune celebrate with us. In fact, we still hung her stocking and held
