ECMO CARE TEAM
• ECMO doctor – has special training in managing ECMO therapy and directs care once the patient is placed on ECMO
• Perfusionist – has special training in operating the heart and lung machine in the operating room and managing ECMO at the bedside
• ECMO specialist – a registered nurse ( RN ) who has critical care training and serves as the technical specialist , trained to manage the ECMO system and the clinical needs of patients on ECMO , under the direction and supervision of an ECMO-trained doctor
• ICU nurse – a registered nurse ( RN ) who has skills to care for critically ill patients in an intensive care unit ( ICU )
• Respiratory therapist ( RT ) – a specialized health care provider trained in critical care and cardio-pulmonary medicine . They work with patients suffering from acute critical conditions and may help manage the ventilator ( breathing machine ) when needed .
• Physical therapist ( PT ) – a specially trained health care team member who helps patients improve their movement and mobility
• Occupational therapist ( OT ) – a specially trained health care team member who helps patients with health issues that affect everyday activities
• Advanced practice providers ( APPs ) – a group of health care team members that includes certified registered nurse practitioners ( CRNPs ) and physician assistants ( PAs ). They help manage patient care , under the direction of the ECMO doctor .
• Nutritionist – a nutrition expert who plans or formulates special meals and recommends specific nutrients for patients
• Social worker – has specialized training to help patients and their families with psychosocial issues , returning home , and any special equipment needed
