often. It keeps me hopping, as they don’t give me a lot of notice. There are more jewelry emergencies than you can imagine. I might have to make 100 pairs of earrings in one day or string 40 necklaces that look like they are straight out of the 1950’s. I love those rush jobs.

Each week about 100 pieces of jewelry go to photographers to be photographed on models. It is a lot to keep up with, who has what, where and when will those photos be published. I juggle a lot. My jewelry has a fun life.

Chris: What inspires your creativity when making a new piece?

Sugar: I am a pushover for all things that relate to color. I see color combinations. I see jewelry in my dreams. I usually create those just so my head knows that I am listening to it.

Chris: You teach jewelry at Austin Community College – what do you tell your students to focus on as they are learning?

Sugar: Focus on the joy of creating. The technique will come with practice. I always try to make my classes fun. If you take my classes, you will learn a lot of tips, tricks and how to market yourself.

Chris: What challenges do you face in your work and why?

Sugar: China. The cheapness of all things China. I am passionate about sourcing as much as possible from USA industries, not just resellers. My “Gay Isber” tags, my findings, boxes, and my plater are all made in the US. Artisan made jewelry costs more and I can’t compete with Cheap China. I don’t even try. My quality is the best ingredients, handmade and created with love.

Chris: Lastly, where can our readers find your beautiful designs for purchase?

Sugar: I have several stores that carry my products. The Hatbox and Csilla Wear on Congress Street in downtown Austin, The Garden Room in Jefferson Square, Threads in Georgetown too many more to list but those are the locals. Also, on Amazon and eBay, just search Gay Isber Join me on social media as “Sugar Gay Isber”.
