Photographer Alejandro Osma Interview

Hello, Alejandro! It's an honor to have this opportunity to interview one of my favorite local photographers. Thank you for agreeing to take the time to join me.

Chris: Tell us a little bit about you?

Alejandro: I am from Bogotá, Colombia and have lived in Austin, Texas since 1998. I have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering although I currently work in the field of education. My passions are traveling, reading, salsa dancing, and of course, capturing life through photography. I also enjoy spending time with my wife Stephanie, my dog Stella and my cats Pandora and Miniola. The rest of my family is in Colombia; my friends are spread out all over the world.

Chris: What sort of photography do you specialize in?

Alejandro: I have been focusing lately on fashion and portraiture.

Chris: Did you go to school to study photography?

Alejandro: Not formally. I started self-studying and attending workshops about five years ago. I am currently working on my CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) certification.

Chris: How long have you been a photographer?

Alejandro: I remember taking pictures of the moon and animals in zoos when I was seven years old, but my professional journey started about five years ago.

Chris: What made you want to pursue photography?

Alejandro: The day of my birthday five or six years ago, I was talking to my coworker about how I was always taking pictures, and I didn’t have a good camera. She dared me to get a good DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera for my birthday. That same day I started researching, and I ended up getting my first DSLR. When the camera arrived, I didn’t know what to do with it, so I started studying the manual, read it several times and started experimenting by taking photos of landscapes and the moon. When I realized how hard was to take portraits, I started attending workshops to learn the technical and the artistic part of photography.

Chris: What types of cameras do you like to shoot with?

Alejandro: I prefer DSLRs, but have been trying mirrorless lately. I am always also experimenting with Polaroids and film cameras.

Chris: What type of lighting equipment do you like to use and why?

Alejandro: I have been using more natural light

lately
