What was your first Makeup experience?
Mine was such an adventure! Full of joy, happy memories, and even tears! Whether you are new to makeup or are a professional makeup artist, there is always a happy feeling in your heart telling you, "Yes girl! You look great with that red lipstick on!"
How It All Began
My love for makeup started 20 years ago when I was 12 years old getting ready for my first day of school. I struggled with straight lashes and dark circles. Thank you genetics. But with my mom and my dear grandma's help, it all came to an end when they gave me my very own gel mascara, my mom's lash curler, and everybody's best friend, concealer. In the blink of an eye, all my "problems" disappeared. Oh, the magic of makeup! I truly was the happiest, prettiest 12-year-old girl on earth when my mom told me how these three beauty products would ENHANCE my natural beauty. This word would completely change the way I see beauty today.
Lessons Learned Early On
I was so excited to try makeup! I knew this day was going to be a day I would never forget. I didn't want my mom to know how excited I was. I wanted to show her that I could handle this beauty thing like a pro. I first tried to curl my straight lashes while my mom watched. She was HORRIFIED when my eyes began to water because I curled not only my lashes but my eye lids! She told me to put the eyelash curler down. I will never forget what she did next. She grabbed the eyelash curler like a pro; she started at the base of her lashes making sure all of her lashes were in the curler without getting any skin in it, and held it down for about three seconds. I remember seeing this beautiful lash transformation. WOW! She was gorgeous! I was so mesmerized and told her, "Mom! Your eyes didn't water!" I'd never seen someone so confident with their makeup application.
To me, my mom was the best makeup artist in the entire world. I said to her, "Please teach me!" She did, and when she gave me back her eyelash curler, I curled my eyelashes just like her. But, my mom told me I wasn't done. She gave me some clear mascara to hold the curl. I was confused. Aren't all mascaras black? My mom told me I was too young for black mascara and had to use the clear one. I went to school that day feeling like I was the cutest.
After getting picked up from school, my mom asked me what was wrong because I was not as happy as when I left the house in the morning. I told her that some kids were picking on me because they said I look like a skull with my dark circles. She let me know that I should not feel like I was less of a person because I had dark circles under my eyes and talked to me about feeling beautiful and unique. That's who I am, and she loves me because of that.
I woke up the next morning feeling all beautiful and unique, and she told me to get ready for school. After I had come back from what it seemed a long day of school, she told me that my grandma sent me something in the mail. It was concealer. She helped me put on the concealer, and I was so surprised how it covered my dark circles! My mom told me that I could use it for school, but she said, "Remember what I said. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, AND I LOVE YOU!" I will never forget those words. I will be forever grateful to my mom and grandma for introducing me to this fantastic world. I've now made enhancing beauty my livelihood.
