Welcome to Hitting the Seam 39
Our 2017 insight developed in partnership with
Two Circles demonstrates that ECB Coaches
Association has the following demographic profile:
92%
The same is true of female players, with 72%
identifying coaching as “very important”.
The need for many of those to be coached by
someone of the same gender is also apparent, as:
30%
4%
1%
1%
African Asian South White
Caribbean Other Asian
Over 25
96%
90%
of South Asian players
said more female coaches
would encourage more
South Asian women and
girls to play
Meanwhile, attendances at our courses tell us
that:
of coaches taking
courses since 2013, 6%
have been South Asian,
while 25% of players
are South Asian
Male
Combine those stats with what insight from the
National Playing Survey and South Asian strategy
consultation told us:
70% of South Asians say they would
like to be coached, compared to 57%
across all ethnicities
61% of South Asians say coaching is
“very important”, compared to 44%
across all ethnicities
It’s clear that we are in demand, but need to look
at the supply.
6%
Therefore, our first issue of 2018 focuses on
diverse communities and extending the reach of
cricket, coaching and coach development.
Guiding us into this topic are three of the people
behind the ECB’s South Asian strategy, Gulfraz
Riaz, Mohammed Arif and Wasim Khan.
Then, as you read on, you’ll hear from some of the
coaches already being inspired by – and inspiring
– a new wave of players and fans.
Finally, look out for Coaches Matter Issue 27 that
has returned to print and explores the headlines
of the national coaching strategy.
Enjoy!

building on the excellent work of John Stannard
and David Gallagher.
“If we are fortunate, we can look back and
appreciate the lasting impact that one or
more great coaches have made to our lives.
They inspire and support us, improving our
skills and approach to both the game and life
itself. Whether you are a volunteer or full-time
professional, you have accepted this vital role,
sharing your passion for cricket and helping
