By diana clement\r\n“ouR CHiLDReN ARe finding themselves\r\nin an ever increasingly difficicult financial\r\nenvironment which they are going to have\r\nto navigate through in their early years,”\r\nsays Jeff Stangl, senior lecuturer at Massey\r\nuniversity’s School of economics & finance.\r\nThere are periodic calls for financial literacy to be taught in school as a subject.\r\nHowever the New Zealand Curriculum is\r\nfull enough as it is without a new subject,\r\nbut that the life skill of financial literacy can\r\nbe interwoven in by teaching basic concepts through other subjects.\r\nThe good news is that a cluster of schools\r\non Auckland’s North Shore are doing something about that. They’re integrating financial literacy education into their curriculum.\r\nThe aim is to ensure that by the time their\r\ncurrent crop of students Pass Go and enter\r\nuniversity that they’ll be financially fluent.\r\nit’s not easy. The current crop of children\r\nof today live in a cashless society where\r\nthey can spend money they don’t have.\r\nTheir parents had passbooks and piggy\r\nbanks and life was simpler.
