The politician was admitted to the Jackson Memorial Hospital , located in Miami , Florida . The cause of death was established as a heart attack . Novoa , originally from Guayaquil , Ecuador , held the presidency of the Republic from January 22 , 2000 , to January 15 , 2003 .
