WHERE TO GO
Tarragona has got it all: a beautiful old town, Roman ruins
and beaches too. Explore the narrow old streets around the
cathedral which echo to the music of the conservatoire students
practising. Escape from the heat in one of the restaurants
built into the city walls. And if you’re tired of the hustle and
bustle, you can take a break on one of the golden beaches.

Hold your breath watching the human towers
Castells – or human towers – are a tradition of Catalunya. Teams of
castellers compete in breathtaking competitions culminating in the
smallest team member, usually a tiny girl, shimmying up the bodies
of her teammates to the top. Tarragona calls itself ‘the city of human
towers’ and visitors can watch the local teams rehearsing as well as
several competitions throughout the summer. The biggest event is
the Santa Tecla festival from 15 to 24 September (see page 12).
