CO U R S E S & C A REERS SCIENCE Why Do We Need Food Scientists and Technologists? The world’s population has hit 7 billion and there is a risk that we cannot feed them all properly. Food scientists, therefore, have to make sure that all 7 billion get to eat food that is safe, legal, and produced using quality methods. Different fields within the food technology industry will require different skill sets. A manufacturing technologist will work more directly with production and factory teams. Those working with manufacturers will focus on the field of retail food technologists. Others in this field are directly involved in product creation and sampling, as in the production of energy drinks, new alcoholic beverages and Halloween candies, for instance. A food technologist’s job is to make these safe and tasty. It is not just about taste; fat-free versions of certain foodstuffs, ready-to-eat foods, and consumables designed to enhance focus, stamina or mental ability are all discovered through rigorous experimentation. If you are excited by the creation of new food and making the world a yummier place, this is your job.
