With this issue of East Texas Quarterly coming off the press in May, it only seemed appropriate that we include articles honoring those men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. May 30th is Memorial Day and a tribute to Texas’ fallen heroes and heroines is well- deserved. On March 29th, the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument was dedicated on the grounds of the state capitol in Austin honoring Texas Vietnam veterans. Read more about the monument and the men and women from East Texas communities who served and were killed in action in Vietnam. Also included in this issue is an article highlighting the service and history of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division stationed at Fort Polk, La. Since 2006 the brigade has deployed more than 6,000 troops to Iraq and Afghanistan. Read more about the history of these men and women. Remember, not just on Memorial Day but every day, when you see a man or woman in uniform, thank them for their service. Gary W. Hanlon Editor/Publisher 1
