English and maths functional skills
English and maths functional skills (FS)
Functional Skills courses are based on real life situations/activities and can be adapted to suit
your own needs. Here are some practical examples, which will vary from level to level. On a FS
English course you may for example learn how to write or answer an email, how to prepare for
and do a job interview, discuss the news or use a cash machine. On a FS maths course you may
learn how to calculate the amount of paint you need to apply for two coats on a living room wall
and ceiling, or how to calculate percentages on a credit card repayment.
Functional Skills English and maths are a mandatory component of diplomas, foundation
learning programmes and apprenticeships. They can be studied as a stand-alone qualification
or as a stepping stone to GCSE.
The full level FS English consists of exams in the following:
• Speaking and listening
• Reading
• Writing
Assessment for FS maths is by a single examination at the end of the course.
