INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING COURSES ESOL, ENGLISH AND MATHS FAMILY LEARNING ESOL, English and Maths English and maths functional skills English and maths functional skills (FS) Functional Skills courses are based on real life situations/activities and can be adapted to suit your own needs. Here are some practical examples, which will vary from level to level. On a FS English course you may for example learn how to write or answer an email, how to prepare for and do a job interview, discuss the news or use a cash machine. On a FS maths course you may learn how to calculate the amount of paint you need to apply for two coats on a living room wall and ceiling, or how to calculate percentages on a credit card repayment. Functional Skills English and maths are a mandatory component of diplomas, foundation learning programmes and apprenticeships. They can be studied as a stand-alone qualification or as a stepping stone to GCSE.
