Functional Skills (FS) English and Maths
Functional Skills courses are based on real life situations/activities and can be adapted to suit
your own needs. Here are some practical examples, which will vary from level to level. On a FS
English course you may for example learn how to write or answer an email, how to prepare for
and do a job interview, discuss the news or use a cash machine. On a FS Maths course you may
learn how to calculate the amount of paint you need to apply for two coats on a living room wall
and ceiling, or how to calculate percentages on a credit card repayment.
Functional Skills English and Maths are a mandatory component of Diplomas, Foundation
Learning Programmes and apprenticeships. They can be studied as a stand-alone qualification
or as a stepping stone to GCSE.
Our courses range from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 (equivalent to a D at GCSE).
The full level FS English consists of exams in the following:
1. Speaking and listening
2. Reading
3. Writing
Assessment for FS Maths is by a single examination at the end of the course.
