LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
With fall upon us , the maintenance staff will be working on things to get the course ready for the winter months . This is an important month to finish up fertilizer applications , spraying turf weeds , and making sure the greens are as healthy as possible heading into cooler weather .
The fertilizer applications this month will give the bermuda grass its final food source for the season . It will store these nutrients in the root system and allow for a faster spring green up . I am trying to allow the turf to be as strong as possible to endure the cart traffic and cold temperatures . Cart traffic is one of the main issues in cooler weather because the turf won ’ t heal fast enough . Please do your best to follow our stakes and directional signage . It is important that we all do what we can to keep turf coverage throughout the golf course .
We will continue to spray weeds in the bermuda grass until the first heavy frost . We will reduce our rates to keep from injuring the bermuda as much , but this will take longer for the weeds to die off . The Farmer ’ s Almanac is calling for a colder than normal winter . It has been several years since central Florida has had a truly cold winter . It would be a nice change of pace to get some cold weeks to help freeze back some of the insect and weed populations . We need all the help we can get .
I hope everyone is enjoying the golf course . It is a day-to-day challenge keeping the course up to high standards . I am proud of what we have accomplished , and the plan we are following for the future . We continue to improve daily , and the sky is the limit .
