The summer months are going by quickly with some record high temperatures and an active hurricane season . The golf course has held up well to the heavy storms we received in early-August from tropical storm Debby . We received around 8 inches of rain total with just over 4 inches coming down in a 4-hour period . I am very proud of the maintenance team being able to get the golf course back open quickly for all to enjoy . This storm washed out some weak areas around bunkers and drains that we will continue to repair into September .
The maintenance staff will be working on repairing and sodding some areas around the golf course at the beginning of the month . We are trying to tackle this before the temperatures cool off and slow the growth of the bermudagrass down . We are incorporating some organic material to beef up these week areas by tilling in some compost before we sod the areas . As the golf course ages , the organic material that helps retain water in the soil profile is washed down to the lower drain areas leaving weak areas with a sandier base on bunker faces and some tee areas with a higher elevation . This makes it nearly impossible to retain the moisture needed for healthy turf . I am confident by tilling in some organic compost that we can increase the sod ’ s chance to grow successfully in these areas . We will continue this process next summer also when we are closed for our greens renovation .
The club has recently purchased 6 irrigation control boxes to modernize our irrigation system . The old Toro controllers were original to the golf course and most parts available for repairs on these controllers are reconditioned and no longer made new . We have 16 control boxes and have set this up as a 3-year
