CONSISTENT CONTACT
LETTER FROM THE TEACHING PROFESSIONAL
I sure hope everyone had a start to the new year both on and off the course ! This month we ’ re going to dive into the keys for consistent contact with the ball . Because who doesn ’ t like feeling a flushed iron shot , or a smashed driver , or a nice pure wedge shot . But first we must understand some of the basics for making consistent contact . The first place to start is by taking a look at ball positions in relation to your stance . With different clubs the ball positions will change based on the length of the club . Also ball positions can change based on how long your wing span is compared to your height , someone with longer arms relative to their height is going to move the ball slightly more forward in the stance to make sure the club bottoms out at the right time . Using an alignment stick that points toward the ball can give you a visual where the ball position is when you practice .
The next step in creating consistent contact is to look at look at our posture when we address the ball . Again , everyone ’ s posture will be different posture is also based on wingspan vs height , to help find your correct posture if you stand up tall and straight and then bend at the waist then put your hand on your thigh your hand should be somewhat above the knee , and then flex your knees until your hand comes to the top of your kneecap .
Once we have the correct ball position , and our body is in the proper posture , the next check is balance , where you feel your balance point is . You would not want to feel your weight back in your heels as that will cause us to loose balance away from the ball as we extend the arms , causing an inconsistent strike as we swing . Ideally , we want you to feel balanced under the balls of your feet throughout the golf swing .
With our three fundamental contact keys unlocked , it is now to get out on the range and practice . I would suggest bringing an alignment stick to check ball positions , I would also suggest bring a camera to look at posture while addressing the ball .
Hope you have a great Holiday Season and look forward to seeing you at the course !
