I ’ m first to arrive , tires crunching On the driveway , my other friend shortly after It will only be the three of us tonight Drinking cola out of champagne glasses And eating cookies off ceramic plates Distant smells lead us out of the house To where the fire someone else made Burns brightly in the dark for us We sit down in old , weathered chairs Talking about frivolous things : Crushes , our classes , and random celebrities Trying to avoid the inevitable topic It goes unspoken , but we are all thinking it None of us brave enough to utter a word Eventually , it seeps through the cracks Like smoke from the fire , prying out And spilling to the world in front of us : Senior year is here It only felt like yesterday We were sitting on the ground Eating our lunch during Eagle Hour Without a care in the world
We sit silently in the dark As the fire crackles on Where do we go from here ? Suddenly , flood lights flash on To our left , startling us all
