Master Your Passion
Given that premise , the two most important questions we should ask are :
1 ) How much and ... 2 ) What types of practice will help you be most successful at doing the Camping and RV activities you want to do ?
We ’ ll look at each of those questions next . As Malcolm Gladwell explains in his book Outliers : The Story of Success , becoming an expert at anything requires approximately 10,000 hours of practice .
That ’ s a lot of time ! Where does that “ 10,000 hours ” figure come from ? up with 10,000 hours ’ worth of mediocrity ! Now , that would be disappointing , wouldn ’ t it ?
Ever see people that have been playing darts for years , but still can ’ t hit a bullseye from the 7 feet 9-inch distance in front of them ? YES ! Many still can only hit the dartboard , if they ’ re lucky .
So , what is deliberate practice ?
It ’ s the kind of concentrated effort that consistently pushes a person to want to achieve greater and greater proficiency .
An instructor or coach can supervise the practice to provide guidance — both to prevent bad habits as well
That number is based on the research of Dr . Anders Ericsson of Florida State University . His findings appear to show that persistence and effort matter far more than natural talent , once someone has attained a certain level of proficiency at a given skill .
Here ’ s an example : Although having a natural talent for perfect pitch would help a musician initially , only an endless amount of practice , practice , practice will eventually vault that musician to the level of virtuoso .
But does just any type of practice count toward the 10,000 hours target ? Actually , no . It must be what Ericsson calls “ deliberate practice .” Otherwise , you could easily end as to reinforce and improve the student ’ s performance .
And what does the student ultimately aim to achieve ? To carry out each task or motion so fluently that there ’ s no need to think through each step . The learner ’ s actions will have reached the point where the steps they have to take have become second nature .
Fortunately , the time required to master the process of maneuvering and parking a large RV will involve a lot less than 10,000 hours . But as you guide yourself in navigating the ins and outs of properly handling your RV , keep reminding yourself that the process takes time to learn . You also need plenty of constructive feedback until you become truly proficient .
