Holding , an outdoor enthusiast and traveler most of his life , published Cycle and Camp in Connemara ( 1901 ) and The Camper ’ s Handbook ( 1908 ). It was thanks to his first book that the Association of Cycle Campers was born , the first known camping group .
When it comes to physical camping locations the first US campground established may have been the Gunnery Camp in Washington , Connecticut in 1861 . This was a boys ’ camping area developed by Frederick and Abigail Gunn who ran a boys school . In 1874 , the YWCA ( Young Women ’ s Christian Association ) founded “ Sea Rest ” a campground for women in Asbury Park , New Jersey . The men followed , developing a YMCA ( Young Men ’ s Christian Association ) camp named Camp Dudley in Newburgh , New York in 1885 . Soon after , campgrounds were developed by the Boy Scouts , followed by the Girl Scouts and the National Park Service . The first possible public camping ground in the world may have been established in 1894 , Cunningham ’ s Camp on the Isle of Man , between England and Ireland . All of these camping grounds paved the way for private landowners to establish their own .
Driftstone Campground was established by Earl and Margaret Ackerman in 1965 , becoming fully operational in 1966 .
The history of RVs in the United States began in the 1800 ’ s , but really got popular in the 1920s . The first RVs documented were trailers or towables used in conjunction with other vehicles . Many of the first RVs were built by hand and merged 1915 technology with the back to nature movement , which led to the invention of the first motor homes .
Americans across the nation have been attracted to the great outdoors ever since people landed in the New World . They came in search of freedom and opportunity . At that time , recreational vehicles took the form of ships crossing the sea , with their only transportation being horse and wagon .
As these new settlers expanded westward , their recreational vehicle of choice was the covered wagon , with utility wagons in tow . When ships , horses and covered wagon began to be replaced by roads and cars , people were enabled to see more of this great country , making discoveries and enjoying each new step forward . With the advent of reliable roads , came the motor car and recreational travel paving the way to the modern day recreational vehicle that has come to be known as the RV .
With reliable transportation , quickly came the urge and need to travel to the four corners of America , to build commerce among residents , then to begin exploring this great country as a pastime . As people moved about the country word got out of beautiful lands to enjoy at their leisure , and new routes were established to foster the growth . Before they knew it , their primitive yet growing commerce began to thrive , and attracting visitors exploring more and more became the talk of the town .
Americans got the travel bug even in these early days as a nation .
