How to pick an RV type and layout

Motorized or Towable ? When you hear the word “ RV ,” you probably think of a classic motorhome with an engine . In fact , “ RV ” just means “ recreational vehicle ,” and anything on wheels that provides you with a home in the great outdoors counts . No engine required . The wide world of RVs can be broken down into two categories : motorhomes and towables .

C

CLASS B : The smallest motorized RVs are called “ Class B ” motorhomes . These are on a van chassis , like a Mercedes Sprinter or a Dodge RAM Promaster . They are typically 19-21 feet long , and can fit into a standard parking spot . When you hear about # vanlife or van conversions , you ’ re hearing about Class Bs .

CLASS B + / SMALL C : Leisure Travel Vans and the Tiffin Wayfarer or Winnebago View are examples of a small C , sometimes called the “ B +.” These also use a van chassis , usually a Mercedes Sprinter . But instead of the narrower van body , manufacturers use a wider body “ box ” to allow for features like slide-outs and wider aisles . These are typically somewhere around 25 feet long — still pretty easy to park in a normal lot , but definitely bigger than a Class B van .
CLASS C : Next up is the

SMALL C

Class C , which is essentially an “ RV box ” living space atop a truck chassis , usually a Ford or a Chevy . Winnebago and Coachmen are two popular manufacturers of Class C motorhomes , but you ’ ll find lots of different brands out there . Class Cs are easy to spot due to the over-cab bunk that hangs off the front and provides extra sleeping space . For this reason , many Class Cs actually sleep more people than larger Class A ’ s .
