ETOWN : TOURING NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA
“ I would say there ’ s definitely some hidden ones . We all know some of the big ones and we can recognize some of the ones done by Tox Murillo or things like that because we know the style , or even those done by the Kelly and Ty Tompkins ,” Jeanne said . “ I think some of the smaller artists will be able to get some recognition , as well as seeing some that are hidden , because there are a few that are hidden .”
The route the art crawl will take will take participants to the majority of the artwork around downtown Enid . It begins at the Under Her Wing Was the Universe and will also end there , making a circuit around downtown in an effort to show people public art they might not have seen or give them a chance to learn more about the artwork or the artist . Wilson said the tour is a way to try and promote the downtown area as well with multiple stops .
“ We wanted people to be able to come and have a good time ,
have some good food and go to some local spots , promoting downtown in that way as well ,” Wilson said .
Tompkins said the public art has “ enhanced the community pride for a lot of people ,” and with Enid being a creative community , it is a chance for people to gain further appreciation for how creative the community is . She said this tour being a walking tour also gives people a closer look at the artwork as opposed to driving tours .
Tompkins said when the butterfly mural at the intersection of Oklahoma and Grand in downtown Enid was painted by Rick Sinnett , she heard from people who said driving to work in the area was made brighter and made people smile . She said such artwork has continued to raise community pride .
“ Having something that just sparks any kind of joy and connection and happiness , and seeing how many other artists have come out to do them is exciting ,” Tompkins said .
