Update on School Safety
On Tuesday, April 3, 2018, the City Council received an update from Chief of Police Services
Matt McDaniel on current measures to promote safety in our schools. Laguna Niguel Patrol
Deputies are tasked with visiting at least one school campus a day; there were 90 logged
school visits in January, 63 in February and 82 in March. One deputy, Deputy Martin, is
specifically assigned to coordinate all school
programs, maintain a personal relationship with
all school campuses and is an additional
resource when administrators have questions or
need guidance. All tips and threats are taken
seriously and investigated, and the Text a Tip
program is a great success! It is a collaborative
effort between students, school districts, and
law enforcement to increase campus safety by
providing a confidential method of reporting
school-related concerns. Each text is received
by the School Administrator, School Resource
Officer, Campus Security, School Counselors,
and the Office Secretary. Depending on the
nature of the text, the appropriate person
responds. Texts may be traced (to deter
pranksters) and tipsters may receive follow up
texts asking for more details. For issues needing
immediate law enforcement attention, students,
teachers and administrators are advised to call
9-1-1. The County has specially trained deputies
to report to school emergencies, the School
Mobile Assessment Resource Team, and they
have successfully made 173 arrests and recovered 183 weapons including 13 firearms
countywide.
