1. INTRODUCTION
The Mersey Gateway is a six-lane road toll bridge
across the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship
Canal in north-west England. It connects the Central
Expressway in Runcorn with the Eastern Bypass and
Speke Road in Widnes. It is located approximately
1.5 km (0.93 mi) to the east of the existing Silver
Jubilee Bridge.
A second road crossing over the Mersey was a long
held aspiration of Halton Borough Council (HBC) and
its neighbouring local authorities. In 2006 the Mersey
Gateway Project was approved by the UK Department
of Transport.
