Commemoration of Atatürk

19 May the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is an annual Turkish national holiday celebrated on May 19 to commemorate Mustafa Kemal’s landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is regarded as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence in the official historiography.The first “Gymnastics Festival” was held at the sport meadow of Kadıköy İttihad Sports (Union Club until 1915) by Erkek Muallim Mektebi (Teachers’ College for Boys.
Since then,we have been celebrating that day. In our schools some kind sof contests are held and also we listen to concerts. We have volleyball matches with our teachers and we eat our meals in the school garden. Our mothers cook cookies and pastas for us and we share it with our friends.
In big cities it is celebrated with parades.
