The actual figure lies at less than ten percent . Although statistics with religious or ethnic information are prohibited in France , the number of four to five million Muslims of a total population of 60 million is considered credible . 69
On the other hand , Muslims lives are not only made more difficult by the French population , but also by the religious based attacks in the country . With every new attack , French Muslims feel an additional uneasiness and the need to distance themselves from the perpetrators and to have to justify themselves to other French people . 70
4.2 . Germany : effects and influences of immigration policy
In the period after 1945 there was a forced migration of peoples within Germany . The influx of refugees and displaced persons caused tensions and problems with the local population , in particular , due to cultural and denominational differences . At the end of the 1940 ' s the demand for labour in agriculture and heavy industry had grown . In order to meet this need , the Federal Republic reached the first “ Abkommen über Anwerbung und Vermittlung von Arbeitskräften ” with Italy in December 1955 . In the years that followed , similar agreements with other countries were made . 71
In 1970 , increasing numbers of guest workers in Germany led to a fierce debate about the advantages and disadvantages of guest workers . 72 Especially due to the rising criminality among guest worker ’ s children , mainly caused by cultural differences , and was clearly above that of the German youth , aroused fear and rejection amongst the population . This fear and rejection occurred particularly among socially weaker groups in West Germany who were affected by unemployment and fear of the future . 73
