The statistics here show the percentage of guest workers in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1981 , from which the most represented groups originate from Turkey , followed by the then still existing Yugoslavia and Italy . The horizontal columns show the length of stay , which is between 10 and 15 years for the three most represented groups ( Turkey , Yugoslavia and Italy ). 75
In the 1980s , the objective of most immigration groups changed dramatically . Now it was no longer the guest workers or migrant workers who were the focus of attention , but immigration from the poorer and politically unstable regions of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe as well as Third World countries . 76
The reason for this was the collapse of the Soviet Union , the wars in the Balkans and the human rights situation in the Kurdish regions of Turkey .
The rising number of foreign immigrants / asylum seekers caused hostile resentments among the population in the course of the German reunification . 77
Between 1991 and 1993 , xenophobia and violence increased , especially in former East Germany . Attacks on asylum seekers are seen by many Germans with secret joy , and about 40 % of young East Germans find foreigners troublesome , and even 25 % find actions against foreigners justified . 78 Violent clashes with foreigners escalated in Hoyerswerda , Rostock , Mölln and Solingen in the early 1990s . 79
Since the German reunification , at least 49 people , almost all of whom were foreigners , have been murdered by right-wing extremists . 80

This statistic shows that between 1992 and 1993 xenophobic crimes peaked dramatically - this then decreased again in the following years and stabilized at 2 to 3 thousand crimes per year . 82
In August 2006 , the German government passed the , “ allgemeine Gleichbehandlungsgesetz ( AGG )”, law . The aim of the law was to prevent and eliminate discrimination on the grounds of ethnic origin , religion , ideology , disability , age or sexual identity . 83
The number of refugees has risen worldwide , and there has been a noticeable change since 2013 . The most represented refugee group are the Syrians , about 6,700,000 , were fleeing by the end of 2018 . The second largest group were Afghans , followed by South Sudanese . Germany is one of the leading countries in terms of the number of refugees it receives , with 1,064,000 refugees , it is second only to Turkey . 84
