Catholics , Jews , Non-Denominations and others . These services include spiritual counselling , conducting weddings , officiating funerals and memorial services and holding worship services according to the diverse spiritual beliefs of those they serve .
I believe our military recognizes the need to value the spiritual aspect of individuals and to encourage them to continuously invite to have God with them . The invocation of God ’ s presence is imbedded in the oaths that are taken when the enlisted personnel and officers are sworn in . They begin this oath by “ I , _____, do solemnly swear ( or affirm ) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies …”, and they finish this oath with “ So help me God .” It brings to mind an invitation extended to God by King Jehoshaphat of Judah when he was about to be attacked by a vast army . This king and the people of Judah inquired of the Lord for help . He prayed to God “… We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us . We do not know what to do , but our eyes are upon you .” Then God replied to him “… Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army . For the battle is not yours , but God ’ s ” ( 2 Chronicles 20:1-15 ).
Our military , like King Jehoshaphat , knows the value of God ’ s presence and allowing the people of diverse religious practices to seek God at the beginning of their military career and then gives them permission to seek God as they journey through their time in military service . Yes , we can all ( military and civilian ) sing or pray with each other these forever powerful words “ God Bless America … our home sweet home !”
