About the Author: Kathy Winters is the managing member/operator of Red Horse Valley, LLC located
in the Missouri Ozarks, raising Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats and providing fresh goat milk direct from the
farm. She is the daughter of a former high school FFA pig farmer turned US Air Force lifer. Kathy earned
her BS with Highest Honors and High Honors in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of
Michigan – Ann Arbor, and went on to earn her MS in Biology with an emphasis in Developmental
Biology from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA. She spent over 20 years in scientific
research in areas such as developmental biology, cancer research and metabolic disorders.
While living in Thousand Oaks, CA Kathy began keeping katahdin sheep for her border collies and border
collie rescue fosters. The transition to raising Nigerian Dwarf goats, which her trainer used for starting
puppies, began her career in breeding top quality Nigerian Dwarves. Upon her mother’s passing, Kathy
found a property adjacent to the family farm in Missouri on which her father was raised. After 11 years
of diabetes drug discovery research at Amgen, Inc she moved to Missouri and started goat
ranching/dairying full time.
