anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology . From there , the lineup spans subjects from HAZMAT to Emergency Vehicle Drivers Training and covers the National Incident Management System and the Traffic Incident Management System as well as Emergency Medical Responder classes .
In the spring semester , students move into the EMT program , equipped with the knowledge from their previous studies . This broader base of experience , Prater says , gives them a strong foundation on which to build their skills as intense textbook training , dedication and discipline develops their confidence further before the live simulation .
“ They will finish with EMT if they pass the National Registry Exam ,” he said . “ The program gives them more of a foundation , if they want to go into the nursing program , flight nurse , flight paramedic , firefighter or whatever direction they want to go .”
At the end of the spring semester , students then take part in the hands-on skills portion with equipment they ’ d see in the actual field . “ Red River ’ s been very supportive in equipping the program for a real world learning experience ,” he said .
In the first year of the simulation ’ s return following the COVID-19 pandemic , Prater said two students , Faith Robbins and Austin Tucker , went on to compete at an international leadership conference with the program after placing first in the skills state level of Health Occupations Students of America ( HOSA ). During that competition , Prater said the two had to treat and package a patient .
Tucker , who wants to become a fireman , said the experiences from RRTC and the program are why he loves the school .
“ This school doesn ’ t give you job opportunities , it gives you career opportunities ,” Tucker said . “ It ’ s a vast difference between them and that ’ s awesome , because this is building life career stuff and that ’ s what ’ s cool about it .”
Robbins said she ’ s always wanted to become a flight nurse and this path takes her to her goal .
“ You can work as an EMT for five years on the ground and then you can transfer to begin flight nurse ,” Robbins said . “ It ’ s really cool , because when you get to be a flight nurse , people really , really need you . They ’ re having the worst day of their life . They ’ re possibly bleeding out all over the helicopter , but you have to take them to the place that they need — a lot of help that we can ’ t offer them around here in Duncan .”
During this year ’ s live simulation event , students began with receiving the accident call and getting an assessment of the scene .
Prater said local agencies helped with the training and included ambulance services , AirEvac , Duncan Fire , Duncan Police , Stephens County Emergency Management , the Chickasaw Nation and more .
“ They ’ re coaching the students , while the students are in the driver ’ s seat this time ,” he said . “ It ’ s really cool , because the students are learning from making mistakes in a safe environment .”
After assessing , students are then tasked to transfer
