Managing diabetes can be complex year-round , but it can be challenging during the holidays . When surrounded by delicious treats and other snacks , it can be hard to stay on track and keep your blood sugar under control .

Here are a few tips to help you through this holiday season .
KEEP A REGULAR EATING SCHEDULE
Try to eat at the same time you usually do . If a family meal is scheduled later than normal , eat a snack during your regular dining time and eat less during the family meal .
EAT YOUR VEGETABLES
During the holiday , vegetables tend to be overlooked . A tossed salad or steamed vegetables are great additions to the menu .
DON ’ T SKIP MEALS
There may be a temptation to skip a meal to save room for the main meal . But that can make managing your blood sugar harder and cause you to overeat due to hunger .
EAT SLOWER
Begin your meal by eating your vegetables and proteins so that when you get to the starches , you are already beginning to feel full .
LIMIT ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
It is always a good idea for those living with diabetes to limit their alcohol consumption or avoid it together . Alcohol can affect your blood sugar and possibly interact with your medications .
CHECK BLOOD SUGAR MORE OFTEN
When consuming large amounts of foods high in carbohydrates , it is essential to check your blood sugar more often . If there are any changes in your levels , you can make modifications as needed .
GET UP AND MOVE .
Try to keep up regular physical activity . Take an after-dinner walk , shoot hoops , or ride a bike . The key is don ’ t be hard on yourself if you overeat and have a lot of carbohydrates . Getting back on track and making healthy choices between holiday gatherings is more important .
