EDITORIAL LETTER

SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO START SMALL

I

sat at my desk hours on end ahead of the deadline for this publication .
I thought , and I thought , and I thought . I had already been met with several frustrations throughout the week and I didn ’ t think I was going to make it out of this time crunch unscathed this time . “ Start small .” The words echoed in my head . I had read them already , twice after editing the stories inside this book , but it didn ’ t sink in . At that moment , Tamara Gregor , reporter , mentioned it out loud . Two different individuals featured in the magazine said “ start small .” The light bulb in my brain lit up . Sometimes you just have to start small and work your way up . We did just that with this magazine as we started springing into Stephens County to find stories , and what a fitting theme to have , because every story here too started small and look — wonderful things are happening in our
community . Just in time for Spring and just in time to turn over a new leaf .
The Healing Garden in Duncan started small when they began their mission of feeding others after the creation of the honor stand . They look forward to continuing expansion .
Think Ability ’ s Community Garden staff started small as they began their hydroponics adventure this year . While they began small with strawberries , future plans include lettuce and other crops .
The Foreman Prairie House , a true jewel in the community , started small with a dedicated group who wanted to preserve the home . The work continues on today but with community outreach , including an opportunity to lend a helping hand in the garden .
Also starting small , The Pickin ’ Place ,
Charlene Belew owned by Alan and Nina Downey , is now open . It took years to acquire the inventory , but here again too , a dream was realized .
And last but not least staff with Duncan Sports & Activity Center , formerly Halliburton Recreational Park , started with small baby steps toward a rehabilitation project that will benefit everyone in Duncan . By this summer , that dream too will be realized .
It ’ s just a solid reminder that it ’ s okay to start small . Big things come from small things . Eventually you ’ ll find your springboard and accomplish the big thing with the help of the small things . I did , these people and groups did , and you can , too .
So keep doing the small things and dreaming the big things . Our community needs it .
