and rocks underneath but when you jerked the rope , it would spring these paddles out and release the anchor back to you . It was probably made Pre-Depression , probably 1920s . They have patent numbers and I Googled them but it was like it didn ’ t exist . It was very unique and it ’ s something that I kept .”
While Nina enjoys the art and the finer items , Alan agrees he ’ s a bit more of a history buff , but both of them take pride in the process together . She takes to the internet to Google and Ebay to look up the items and he enjoys what they learn .
“ I love history and of course in this kind of profession , you gain a lot of knowledge about a lot of things and I ’ m still learning daily ,” Alan said . “ It ’ s something that we both share the same passion for and it ’ s a hobby , it ’ s work , but we enjoy it . You ’ re not going to get rich off of it but we make a little money , and it ’ s definitely something
we found that we both enjoy and it ’ s been pretty awesome .”
Those who are looking to let some items go can , especially at The Pickin ’ Place , but Alan said he ’ s got to stay competitive to keep up with the rest .
“ I ’ m in the resale business and I ’ ve already talked to couple of them that has come , and obviously I ’ m trying to get it at a competitive price because I ’ ve got to make money on it ,” he said . “ I offer them a fair deal . We put our products up against Ebay . We did a lot of research and a majority of our items will beat Ebay ’ s price by 50 %. We look at that and we try to stay competitive . I offer ‘ em a fair deal to where I can make some money on it and some times it works and sometimes it doesn ’ t .”
Even if you ’ re not trying to sell some items , Alan said be sure to check back often , because something not there today may very well show up tomorrow .
“ One thing I try to get out there to everybody is , if we don ’ t have it one day , we may have it the next day because I ’ m constantly putting in new inventory daily and for sure weekly ,” he said . “ I ’ m just rotating stock constantly . I want people to know when they come in , if you didn ’ t find what you were looking for , check back in with me in a day or two because I ’ m constantly updating inventory .”
Since their opening , Nina said the business has come in as waves . Some days there ’ s a lot of activity and some days are quiet , but they enjoy it together and invite the community to also .
