THE ROCK ISLAND 905 RAILROAD MUSEUM SHOWCASES THE FIRST PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVE IN DUNCAN.
Kiddieland park
The Duncan Chisholm Trail Kiwanis Club has provided family fun entertainment for over 100 years with Kiddieland Park.
Kiddieland was established in 1956 and the first ride was the Merry-Go- Round, also known as the carousel.
The second ride came later the same year with six military-themed airplanes.
In 1964, the third ride, the iconic train, was added to Kiddieland Park and in 1969, Kiddieland’ s fourth ride, the Tilt-A-Whirl, was added to the mix.
As the Kiwanis’ primary fundraiser, Kiddieland ride tickets remain at. 50 cents each. The ticket costs help the organization with the rides and facility maintenance, summer swimming lessons and scholarships for graduating seniors at Duncan High School.
Kiddieland is open from mid-May through late August and operates from 6-9 p. m. Thursdays and Sundays and from 7-10 p. m. Fridays and Saturdays. The park is also available for private parties and special events.
One local and historic landmark continues to pull the train whistle for tour groups and guests while showcasing history in Duncan.
The Rock Island 905 Railroad Museum has brought several collaborators together over the years, such as Mike Stuckert who was a key player in maintaining the 905 and all it brings to Duncan.
Dennis Wienck, board president, said the 905 locomotive is special to the Duncan area.
“ It is the passenger locomotive that was used through Duncan between around 1920 to when it was retired in 1952,” he said.“ It actually has history of carrying passengers through Duncan.”
Community members can make donations to the museum and buy souvenirs in the gift shop.
The museum is also open for school field trips and groups with advance notice.
There is no fee to enter the museum, but they do accept donations.
The Rock Island 905 Railroad Museum is open from 1-5 p. m. Thursday-Saturday and is located at 314 N. 15th St. in Duncan. Summer hours in July may vary due to extreme heat.
