A
new era of history came to the historical museum with the introduction of Ned, the Woolly Mammoth, just in time to celebrate the United States of America’ s 250th anniversary.
Stephens County Historical Museam Executive Director Keith Colley said Ned, the Woolly Mammoth, got his name from the kids who visited the museum.
When talking with kids about a mascot, Colley said the first group of kids chose the name and Ned is all over the museum.
This summer, kids will have the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt and find all of the pictures of Ned. In the end, kids will get a prize and a picture of Ned to color to hang at the museum.
The scavenger hunt will run through July with the America 250 theme.
Colley said the kids will get to draw pictures of the artifacts and get introduced to over 100 artifacts.
Participating kids will get the opportunity to learn about America and its history over the past 250 years, along with finding pictures of Ned, Colley said.
America 250 Celebration For the Independence Day celebration July 3, Ned will also make an appearance for photos and hanging out. The celebratory event will run from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. July 3 and bring a Founder’ s Day coronation at 11 a. m., a new exhibit for World War I diorama and a chance to discover woolly mammoth bones in an exhibition for one day only.
