old. She is now 47 years old.“ You know how families are now. There’ s umpteen sets of grandparents. And so I included them because they all stayed part of her life.”
Featuring the women from both sides of her parental lineage, as well as those from her first husband, and her current husband, the quilt is more than just a bunch of blocks pieced together. It’ s the history that belongs to her daughter.
She said the images include both sides of her mother’ s side of the family, and father’ s side of the family, as well as women from Roddy’ s family.
It symbolizes those who are biologically connected to her daughter, and also to those who helped raise her.
“ All but two women were alive and part of her family.” And not all the women featured on the quilt were quilters. Curry was one of five daughters of Donnita and Kenneth Hall, and she is the only one who quilts.
Curry spent more than 20 years as a member of an OHCE group, and while no longer involved with the groups, she still finds ways to stay connected to the county fair. One of those is through her mother, Donnita who was recognized in 2025 for 55 years of OHCE service.
OHCE members are largely responsible for making sure Open Class entries and exhibits are ready for when the doors open to the public. That effort can be traced back more than 65 years. Collectively, they give back to the community through thousands of hours of volunteer service projects.
Both of Curry’ s daughters, Jana and Ashley, are quilters. In 1999, about 27 years ago, Curry and a good friend, Gayla Mosteller, signed up to take quilting classes from Honor Vaughn.“ I even have a picture of us together back then and today.”
Curry’ s grandmother, Virginia Garrett, belonged to a quilt guild, but didn’ t live nearby. Both her grandmother and mother sewed and quilted.“ And then my mother-in-law, Frances Curry, was quite a quilter.”
Curry remembers the first quilt she made was a baby quilt.
“ It was chenille, and all the animals are chenille. I made my own chenille. I still have that quilt. At the same time I made that, I was also making an applique quilt.
