ROLL OUT YOUR BEST FOR THE FREE FAIR’ S PIE CONTEST

An assortment of sweet smells will fill the fairgrounds at the annual pie show during the 119th annual Stephens County Free Fair.

The Best of Show and Best Pie Maker are often called the most exciting titles awarded during the Stephens County Fair Pie Show.
The homemade pie contest is hosted Friday, Aug. 28 with entries accepted between 2-2:45 p. m. Judging will begin at 3 p. m. Extension Educator Megan Monteith said contestants can enter pies prior to the contest Friday, Aug. 28. She said entries will get accepted until 3 p. m.
Monteith said the annual contest gives community bakers a great opportunity to put their baking skills to the test.
“ Whether you’ re an experienced baker or entering for the first time, the pie contest is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your baking skills, celebrate tradition and enjoy some friendly competition,” she said.
The show draws in a variety of pies, including chocolate cream, chocolate, cherry and peach to pecan, custard, apple, pumpkin, berry and other flavors.
Pies are judged on flavor, texture of crust and filling and general appearance. A copy of each recipe is required for judging.
Aprons are awarded to Best of Show and Best Pie Maker in both youth and adult divisions. The judging of the pie competition is open to the public and all are invited to watch and hear the judges’ comments.
To enter a homemade pie, Monteith said bakers will need to complete an entry tag with their Master Number and pie category and then deliver a pie or pies to the designated stage area before the entry deadline.
Monteith said judges will consist of Extension Educators from neighboring counties. She said the educators are recognized for their pie-making knowledge and experience.
“ Entries will be evaluated on both the overall construction and appearance of the pie, as well as flavor and overall taste,” she said.
Winners will receive a commemorative apron in recognition of their achievement.
