friendships, they’ re meeting at coffee shops and they’ re at all these different places and playing together.”
She said bringing people together is the most successful part of what’ s happening with the game.
As coordinators, Gregston said they want to get be established in this area and bring tourism to Duncan and the whole area.
“ To where we drive people to come down here to tournaments and leagues and things like that,” she said.“ So we just bring more money back into the area.”
While the game may be new to some people, Gregston said many people are surprised to find out that it came here in the 1920s and there is a playing card that’ s introduced every single year.
“ The game changes every April, we play all new games,” she said.
Gregston said there is a lot of strategy and skill to the game, but there is also a lot of luck.
“ In a way, you just kind of have to get lucky,” she said.
Additionally, Gregston said you can play Mahjong very inexpensively.
“ You can grab a set at Hobby Lobby for like $ 20, $ 30,” she said.“ You can grab a set off of Amazon then you can invest more money in.”
Gregston said society started the game on a $ 20 set.
With many of the tiles that are higher priced, Gregston said the tiles are created by artists.
“ They use artists to create the tiles,” she said.“ It’ s just a whole bunch of art and it draws you to it.”
Gregston said they are excited to get their first Thunder tiles.
Gregston said the game is a great niche because there’ s no target audience. She said it’ s amazing to see someone who is 19 play the game alongside someone who is 80.
“ They’ re just having the best time,” she said.“ It kind of breaks those language barriers.”
Classes are $ 35 per person, Mahj Brunch is $ 65 and a league is $ 165. Private classes are $ 45 per player. Membership classes will soon prepare to kick off as well and are $ 25 per month.
Gregston said they are grateful for each of their hosts.
“ They really paved the way to give us an opportunity and a platform,” she said.
