The Race
The 2014 Du Toit Tankwa Trek featured a strong pro field with the likes of Team Bulls and Christoph Sauser’s new ABSA Cape Epic partner, Frantisek Rabon, entering the race, along with some of the biggest names in local mountain biking. Even the young XCO contenders made an appearance with the Trek Racing team of Brendan Davids and James Reid testing their early season strength and Orange Monkey’s Mariske Strauss putting in the kays in the lead up to her first Epic.
Stage 1 Description: A recently cut track take riders towards the Witzenberg valley were Hannes and Sakkie Hanekom, who needs no introduction as mountain bikers, are responsible for this amazing track - the route into the valley is via an old ox wagon trail recently opened. The route hugs the vast mountain ranges lining the valley floor and eventually takes riders onto the climb of the day, a 12 km traverse through pine plantations that ends up overlooking Tulbagh on the right and the stunning Witzenberg valley on the left. A well earned decent bring riders back into the heart of the valley and exits them the same way they entered. Another 15km’s and they will be home after a great day of pure mountain biking.
