Nowadays, while open and airy, lofts are not always the palatial expanses we’ve fantasized about via the roof deck of Perch
or Ace Hotel. It can be challenging to get the actual space to do everything you need it to. We encountered this in our
Venice loft, where a successful gallerist planned to use the space not only as her home, but also as a place to stage exhibi-
tions. The focal point of the room was a large table which we created from 2 x 4 sawhorses, on top of which sits the large
glass table surface. When she has an exhibition, she simply removes the glass and sawhorses to the bedroom, and the
space transforms. Once again, the lightness of the glass maintains a sense of openness while in place. We took advantage
of that clear view, upholstering a mix of vintage, asymmetrical chairs in different fabrics. They became a visual element in
their own right, which worked with or without the table.
