Play in Ulster County
Make the short drive and head to Ulster County, N.Y this summer for great stay and play opportunities. The county has a plethora of great courses that are playable for golfers of all abilities and offer affordable greens fees.
The county also features a number of premier hotels and bed and breakfast establishments where you can establish a base to enjoy outdoor activities such as hang-gliding, boating, sailing, fishing, rock climbing in addition to golf. Visitors come to this bucolic area of the Catskills for the slow, simple pace of life. There are local museums, woodland paths to walk, a mix of fine restaurants, shopping in the area’s many antique stores and eclectic art galleries and pottery shops.
“Ulster County is a great place to play and stay because of the great variety of golf courses and the outstanding accommodations all over the county, says Ulster County Tourism Director Rick Remsnyder. “The Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz is an award-winning National Historic Landmark Resort that sits high atop a mountain about five minutes from downtown New Paltz. It features an award-winning spa, a pristine lake, miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There's a huge ice skating pavilion, boating, rock climbing, tennis and of course, a picturesque Scottish-style golf course located just outside the gates of the historic hotel.”
Remsnyder reports a major expansion is taking place at Green Acres Golf Club, a nine-hole course in the city of Kingston. Located adjacent to the Ascot Park Driving Range, the owners of both facilities have teamed up to start extending some of the holes and adding a number of water hazards. In the near future, the well-groomed course expects to add considerable length to its layout, elevating it from an executive-type layout to a legitimate nine-hole test.
“Many people come to Ulster and love to stay at local B&Bs as a base for their golf ventures,” says Remsnyder. “For those who want more traditional accommodations, Kingston has plenty of fine hotels, including the Hampton Inn, the Kingston Courtyard by Marriott, and the Best Western Plus. In Saugerties, where the up and coming Lazy Swan Golf and Country Club Village is drawing rave reviews for its pristine 18-hole layout, many golfers like eating at the golf course's elegant Raw Seafood Bistro. It features some of the tastiest seafood dishes and exotic drinks in the region. They also like staying at the lavish Diamond Mills Hotel and Tavern just 10 minutes from Lazy Swan. Nestled above the Esopus Falls, Diamond Mills offers a lodging and culinary experience like no other in the region.”
Rondout Golf Club, a scenic 18-hole semi-private course in Accord that is located halfway between the cities of Kingston and Ellenville, is known for its excellent conditioning. Hudson Valley Resort and Spa has upgraded its drainage system on the 18-hole resort course in Kerhonkson to keep the golf course playable even during rainy periods. Acclaimed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones designed the Fallsview Golf Course in Ellenville, which has been the site of numerous professional and amateur tournaments. If a golfer likes mountain resort courses, he or she will be thrilled playing at Fallsview at the Honor's Haven Resort and Spa or the Hudson Valley Resort. Apple Greens Golf Course, a 27-hole layout conveniently located just five minutes off the New York State Thruway’s New Paltz exit, is cut right out of an apple orchard. Its signature hole – the par-4 10th – features a green that is designed exactly like an apple.
