Summary
This scenario covers the conditions that effect physical fitness and mental performance. It further aims to encourage the learner to consider that by keeping reasonable fit, they are more alert, have faster reactions, resist fatigue better and think more clearly, all of which help driving performance.
Phase 1 (In car) Duration 3-5 min max
In this initial stage the instructor will ask the learner to list three conditions that would impact on their driving performance. These should be placed in the centre of the resource (Support material TA2).
Phase 2 (Self learning)
In this phase the learner will be asked to reflect on four other conditions of their choice “How would these conditions affect your driving”? The learner would be asked to place the conditions under the following four headings- Thinking, Seeing, Doing and Feeling.
Phase 3 (In car) Duration 3-5 min max
The discussion should encourage the learner to identify the conditions associated with ’fitness to drive’ and how these conditions affect physical and mental alertness. The instructor should then assist the learner to identify that. If they suffer from any condition that impacts on their ability to think, see, do and feel, they should consider the options available. The instructor should ask the learner what are the options they would consider e.g. not driving, seeking medical advice, etc.
