ADI Standards Check; Guidance for Examiners

DSA have now produced the document that is being used in the training of driving examiners to carry out the new standards check.

Careful examination will show that there have been changes to the form first published in our October 2013 e-newsletter.

The form will no doubt evolve further as will the standards check. Any changes this dramatic will need to evolve as experiences are feed back by driving examiners. The national associations had concerns over the marking system especially the automatic fail in ‘risk assessment’. Mike Frisby from the DIA stated correctly that it was possible to fail the whole SC via the risk assessment and yet be outstanding in all other elements. It was also possible to pass with good mark in risk assessment and a poor mark in the rest of the standards check. Lesley Young, Chief Driving Examiner was keen to state that during the trial this had not happened.

As stated in an earlier newsletter concerns are expressed on the failure oriented system.

Many if not all educational institutions would never use the word failure or fail as it undermines the candidates confidence should the candidate wish to resit the exam. The sort of phase used should be unsuccessful.

ADI’s should read the document carefully as this over the next three years is going to have a major impact on our profession.

Make sure you understand the timings, do you plan a 1 hour lesson or a 45 minute, how long should I leave for feedback and a debrief. The timings are mentioned but can be confusing.

It should also be noted that it does not mention whether more tha one attempt is still allowed.
